The newly renovated building for the Supreme Court of Oklahoma has commissioned a painting through the Historical Society. Jean has worked researching the history of the Indian Lighthorse police, the tribal law enforcement for early Oklahoma. These mounted units patrolled the territory and were famed for their skills and integrity. This large painting will hang at one end of the entry foyer in the 1920’s building across from the State Capitol of Oklahoma.
“Study for Lighthorse” is a study of the subject leading to the final painting “Lighthorsemen” which will be installed in June of 2011.

A thought-provoking collection of essays on life and living

Voices from the Heartland is a celebration of women’s contributions to Oklahoma’s recent past. It records defining moments in women’s lives—whether surviving the Oklahoma City bombing or surviving abuse—and represents a wide range of professions, lifestyles, and backgrounds to show how extraordinary lives have grown from the seeds of ordinary girlhoods.

From former Cherokee principal chief Wilma Mankiller, First Lady Kim Henry, novelist Billie Letts, and prima ballerina Maria Tallchief, to OU basketball coach Sherri Coale, the authors share their personal reflections on finding balance as they look back on defining moments in their lives, mull over what they wish they had learned sooner, and convey the wisdom they’ve unearthed on their journeys thus far.

Touching on topics from adultery to left-handedness, from losing children to losing perspective, these essays speak from the heart to reveal what it means to be an American woman today. Carolyn Anne Taylor is Associate Professor of Political Science at Rogers State University, Claremore, Oklahoma. She previously served eight years in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. Emily Dial-Driver is Professor of English at Rogers State University. Her essays, poems, and short stories have appeared in numerous publications. Carole Burrage, a former federal law clerk, is retired as Assistant Professor of Social and Behavioral Studies at Rogers State University. Sally Emmons-Featherston is Associate Professor of English at Rogers State University. Of Choctaw-Cherokee-Irish descent, she specializes in contemporary Native American literature.
